plaza de la sagrada familia
The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia

The design for the Plaza de la Sagrada Familia is one that must connect the church and the city. Adhering to the continuity of the Cerda grid, the design of the plaza employed elements of Gaudi’s original design and social, environmental, and economic data to develop an urbanism for the site. Using the first block for logistical purposes -- that is, tour bus/vehicle parking, primary commercial zones, and designated vending areas -- the anterior block is free to act as the main congregation platform.

Maintaing a continuity with Barcelona, the street level is designed for commerce, the plaza is for social space and the residences are evelated. The discontinuity is marked by a large plaza space that in the axis of the church. The plaza space is split in three with restaurants and social spaces to the right, in shade, a central walkway and stairs oriented towards the glory facade, and softscape and the Gaudi museum to the right. The main platform that connects the plaza to the church is elevated 5 meters from street level and has an abundance of seating area and open space for the congregation.
